Spine

Terms and Conditions

Effective October 15, 2026

These terms cover the Spine app and the Spine website. By downloading, installing, or using Spine, you agree to them and to the Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use Spine.

If you downloaded Spine from the App Store, Apple’s Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to that download. If these terms and Apple’s agreement both speak to the same point, Apple’s agreement controls that point for the App Store copy. Apple is not responsible for Spine or for these terms.

The app

Spine is a reader for comics, manga, and books you already have. It can link a folder and read those files in place, import a file you pick, remember your place, group a series, and look up title and cover information. Spine is a tool for your own library. It is not a bookstore, a comic shop, or a download catalog.

You own your content

You own the comics, manga, books, and other files you open in Spine, or you have a legal right to use them. Spine does not claim ownership of those files. Opening, importing, or organizing a file in Spine does not transfer that file to us, and it does not give Spine a license to publish, sell, sublicense, or redistribute it.

You keep your files if you stop using Spine. Removing a folder link does not delete the original files. Deleting the app can delete private copies stored inside Spine and the library metadata on that device. Export a backup first if you want to keep that metadata.

Spine does not distribute unlicensed works

Spine does not host, sell, or distribute books, comics, manga, or any other copyrighted work. Spine does not ship a catalog of titles, and it does not include illegally licensed, pirated, or otherwise unauthorized material.

The only works Spine opens are files you supply from your own devices or folders. You are responsible for having the right to those files. You agree that you will not use Spine to obtain, copy, share, or distribute anything you do not own or have a legal right to use.

Title, author, summary, and cover lookups from Open Library and AniList are bibliographic information for files you already have. They are not a copy of the work, and they are not a license to that work.

Acceptable use

You agree to use Spine only in line with these terms and the law. You will not:

  • Use Spine to infringe copyright or any other right.
  • Use Spine to distribute illegally licensed or unauthorized copies.
  • Reverse engineer, copy, or resell the app except where the law does not allow this limit.
  • Interfere with the app, the website, or the services Spine uses to look up titles.
  • Misrepresent that Spine provides, sponsors, or licenses the files in your library.

The app itself

Spine grants you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the app on devices you own or control, for your own library. That license is not a sale of the software.

The Spine name, icon, interface, and software are protected by intellectual property laws. These terms do not give you ownership of the app. Open-source components inside Spine remain under their own licenses, which are listed in the app under Settings → Acknowledgements.

Third parties

Open Library and AniList provide metadata and cover images under their own terms. Apple provides the App Store, iCloud, and the device. Spine is not those companies, and their terms apply when you use their services. Links on the website go to places we do not control.

As is

Spine is provided as is and as available. To the fullest extent the law allows, we disclaim warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that a file will open, that a lookup will match, that progress or a backup will be complete, or that the app will be uninterrupted or error-free.

Liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Spine is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the app or the website, including loss of files, covers, or reading progress. Where the law does not allow a complete exclusion, our total liability for a claim is limited to the amount you paid for Spine in the twelve months before the claim, or fifty U.S. dollars if you paid nothing. Some places do not allow these limits. In those places, they apply only as far as the law allows.

Your responsibility

You are responsible for the files you bring into Spine and for how you use the app. You agree to indemnify and hold Spine harmless from claims, damages, and expenses — including reasonable legal fees — that arise from your files, from your use of Spine, or from your breach of these terms, including a claim that a file was copied or distributed without a license.

Ending use

You can stop using Spine at any time by deleting the app. We may stop offering Spine, or stop supporting a version of it. Sections that should survive — ownership of your files, the ban on unlicensed distribution, disclaimers, liability, and this paragraph — continue after you stop.

Changes

Updates to these terms are posted on this page with a new effective date. Continuing to use Spine after an update means you accept the new terms. If you do not accept an update, stop using Spine.

Law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Maryland, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. Courts in Maryland are the venue for disputes, except where the law requires otherwise. If a provision is found unenforceable, the rest of these terms stay in effect.
